I've created these learning mats to help my preschooler learn to sound out simple words.  He loves our collection and is always ready to read a few!

Not just have they helped him get more than automated at sounding out simple words, but they've also built his vocabulary and helped him master beginning blends (fl, st, cr, etc.) and digraphs (sh, th, ch, wh).

UPDATE: My give-and-take family mats give reading practice with analytic phonics instruction. Analytic phonics is when you use known words or word parts (such as word families) every bit analogies for figuring out words. Many children do very well with analytic phonics instruction. Notwithstanding, equally I learn more than nearly the scientific discipline of reading, I at present prefer to commencement with synthetic phonics instruction. You can learn more near that in this video web log post.

How to assemble and use Read 'north Stick Mats:

ane) Impress and laminate each mat on sturdy cardstock.  I love this affordable dwelling house laminator and laminating sheets!  And so impress and laminate each set of cards. Cut them apart and stick velcro dots to the pictures and backs of the cards.

2) You can certainly print the mats and cards on plain paper, and accept your child friction match them. However, for a more durable and lasting activeness, I recommend #1.  A bonus of the velcro dots is that y'all can store the mats without the cards getting lost — simply stick them on!

3) My mats were constantly getting misplaced until I punched holes in them and stored them in a 3-ring binder.

4) Take off all the cards. Have your kid read the name of the family in the center of the board. Then have him read each bill of fare and lucifer it to the picture show. You will exist education new vocabulary along the manner when he gets stuck on a particular give-and-take ("What's a cog?").

5) After a few times of doing this with you, this is something your child might be able to exercise himself.  You lot can pull out the folder for a reading warm-up before trying some early on reading books — or if you're non there nonetheless, do a few Read ' Stick mats after you read books together.  Y'all could fifty-fifty put the binder in a purse and bring it along to the waiting room.
